Water retention is most commonly characterised by swelling of the fingers, ankles or feet. It is aggravated by standing and hot weather, and is worse at the end of the day. Water retention is more likely to occur in women, where it is often associated with the menstrual cycle or pregnancy. The cause may lie with the heart and circulation, poor kidney function, an allergy or toxic overload in the body. It is important to assess any medication that is being taken, including orthodox diuretics which, if taken long-term, can compound the problem. Salt intake should be minimized – high levels of salt are found in all pre-packaged and processed food, butter, smoked foods, cheese, nuts, dried meats and fish, sausages, bacon and cured meats. In pregnancy when oedema is associated with high blood pressure, protein in the urine and headaches, toxaemia is likely and URGENT professional help is required. If you have suddenly developed water retention it is important to seek a professional opinion of the cause.
