Essential Fatty Acids

In an ideal world we would get all the nutrients we need from our food and drink. Unfortunately this is not always possible. There are a number of reasons for this including 1) the poor quality of the soil in which our food is grown, 2) Crop breeding programmes leading to a loss of certain essential nutrients from staple foods e.g. the reduced essential fatty acid content of our modern grains and cereals 3) Lack of sufficient physical activity to enable efficient absorption of food. 4) Poor food choices involving processed, pre-packaged foods of questionable nutritional value. 5) Increased demand for particular, scarce nutrients at certain times in our lives e.g. after illness or an operation, during pregnancy etc.

For these and other reasons it may be essential under certain circumstances to take supplemental vitamins, minerals, digestive aids etc.
Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs) are especially lacking in our modern 21st Century Western diet, being found primarily in seeds, nuts and oily fish such as Salmon and Herring. Deficiency of EFAs can allow inflammation of many kinds to become out of control and supplementation is therefore a key aspect of treatment for inflammatory conditions such as Eczema, Arthritis, Asthma etc. High Potency Fish Oil is to be recommended for arthritic conditions while Flax Seed Oil and Essential Balance Oil are ideal for inflammatory skin conditions.
