While occasional insomnia is acceptable it can soon become a chronic problem with a variety of possible causes. For many the mind simply won’t switch off from the business of the day. Externally there are several measures you can take: use Lavender or Neroli Essential Oil either in the bath, or added to a body lotion or one of our Base Oils as a calming massage before bed. Put Sleep Blend Essential Oil in an oil burner in the bedroom and sleep with a herb-filled pillow (choose hops or lavender).
Calcium and Magnesium supplements can prove beneficial for some people.
Relaxation and breathing techniques and relaxing baths before bedtime are to be recommended, while regular exercise outside of your usual daily activities helps to burn off excess adrenalin. Avoid tea and coffee especially after 6pm but you may need to stop them altogether as the effects can last many hours. Chocolate and Coca-Cola also contain caffeine that will keep you awake.
Poor sleep can be associated or lead to depression and obviously tiredness. Both can be debilitating and dangerous states and if simple self-help measures do not quickly work be sure to seek professional advice. High blood pressure can be associated with insomnia which would be worth checking out.
