Fatigue

In our busy 21st Century lives we commonly live beyond reasonable limits and, un-surprisingly, fatigue is something we encounter more and more among patients at our practice in East Sussex.

For the many people whose fatigue is associated with poor sleeping habits, don’t rely on coffee to stay awake during the day instead try to relax and nourish your nervous system with good food, rest and the amount of exercise and fresh air that is within your limits.

General all round health can be improved with a Vitamin and Mineral Supplement. Vitamin B Complex is important for maintaining a healthy nervous system – especially important if you are over-stressed or run-down after a period of illness. CoQ10 and Anti-Oxidants are thought to enhance energy levels.

Alcohol, recreational drugs and sedatives block REM sleep and should be avoided. Rest and eat lots of healthy, unprocessed food; it may be all your body needs for full recovery. Oats are especially good at providing sustained energy-release.

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) or ME as it used to be known, appears to have a viral origin in some cases and is sometimes referred to as Post-Viral Fatigue in recognition of this. In clinical practice the condition is commonly associated with poor digestive function, reduced immune response and what we call adrenal depletion. Extreme exhaustion, muscle fatigue, reduced mental ability and digestive upset commonly feature.

Treatment must incorporate the basic concept of convalescence (see our section on this subject for more information) and address the fundamental issues of immune function, adrenal function  as well as the nervous system and circulatory issues.

Essential fatty acid supplements such as Essential Balance Oil, Flax Seed Oil and High Potency Fish Oil should also be considered an essential part of treatment, as should a course of multi-vitamins such as Multi-Guard or Floradix.

Despite all the theories and conflicting information surrounding CFS, one thing is certain: professional help and support is needed long-term in order to get to grips with this complex condition.

Seek professional advice also if your appetite is reduced or if a period of rest (at least several days) does not significantly reduce fatigue.
