Cold Sores and the Herpes Virus

Cold Sores tend to appear whenever the immune system is low and this includes times when we are stressed physically, mentally or emotionally.  In terms of diet, eat foods that are high in lysine such as fish, chicken, cheese, beef, beans, brewer’s yeast and mung bean sprouts. Avoid foods high in arginine, an amino acid needed for the virus to replicate, this includes foods such as chocolate, carob, coconut, oats, wholewheat and white flour, peanuts, soyabeans and wheatgerm. Otherwise, daily beetroot juice helps to boost the immune response while, of course, plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables are essential. Finally, the herpes virus thrives when we are run down, so be sure to get sufficient sleep and take time out to de-stress.
