While cleanliness is important in the treatment of Acne avoid using harsh chemicals that dry the skin and never use cream at night, when the skin needs to breathe, instead apply Rose Aromatic Water. As a daily cleansing routine we recommend use of Weleda’s Deep Cleanser in place of soap, with facial steam baths at least twice weekly to open and cleanse the pores and application of Aknedoron lotion after washing or steaming. Tea-tree Cream can be used directly on spots in addition to the lotion. Vitex can be very useful in addressing hormonal imbalance but should be used under the advice of a herbalist.

The Dr Hauschka system of skin care provides a total regime for problem skin involving Cleansing Cream, Clarifying Toner, Rhythmic Night Conditioner and Normalising Day Oil.

Supplements of Zinc, Vitamin C and essential fatty acids such as Essential Balance Oil or Flax Seed Oil are strongly recommended in the treatment of acne to help counter infection and inflammation and generally maintain healthy skin. A multi-vitamin/mineral such as Multi-Guard or Floradix may also be advisable, especially for teenagers whose diet often leaves something to be desired!

In addition to the above measures, assessment must be made of any chemicals that are being used or drugs that are being taken. Finally, regarding the diet: always use good quality oils for cooking and eating, preferably virgin olive oil; eat plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables; and avoid all sugar as far as possible, including processed carbohydrates (biscuits, cakes, sweets and sugary drinks) and chocolate.
