Stress is related to over-activity of the nervous system and a combination of herbal medicines, natural remedies and dietary measures can go a long way towards calming things down. Calming herbal remedies include Passion Flower Compound, Skullcap Compound and Valerian Compound. For depression use St John's Wort. Stomach problems associated with stress respond well to our Melissa Compound, while for high blood pressure triggered by stress use Hawthorn Berry. Depletion of energy occurs if the stressful period is prolonged, to counter this use Ginseng (Siberian) Capsules alongside our Valerian Compound. In terms of diet it is essential to stop agitating the nervous system with coffee, chocolate and sugary foods, instead provide it nourishment with a good diet of unprocessed foods, fresh fruit and vegetables, raw, cold-pressed oils, such as safflower and sunflower (which can be used in salad dressings) and especially foods high in B vitamins such as Oats, yeast extract and Brewer's yeast. Additional Vitamin B Complex is strongly recommended, while if your diet is poor a Multi Vitamin/Mineral supplement, such as Multiguard or Floradix, would also be advisable. Evening Primrose Oil, Starflower Oil or Essential Balance Oil can be taken in capsule form, especially if you aren't having a daily intake of cold-pressed oils. During times of stress alcohol is best avoided, particularly in excess, as it depletes the nervous system, particularly of B vitamins, and will tend to deepen any depression. Be sure to drink plenty of water as dehydration is a significant and surprisingly common element in stress. Try herbal teas or coffee substitutes (Barleycup, Bambu, Yannoh) or juices instead of your usual tea and coffee. Practice relaxation and breathing exercises and take regular exercise - one of the best stress busters there is - this in turn will help you rest and sleep. Yoga, in particular, is an excellent way of reducing stress in the long term. To help with sleep develop a winding down regime involving a relaxing bath with a calming essential oil such as Chamomile, Lavender or Neroli or try our lovely Neroli Bath Foam. A herb-filled pillow (Lavender or Hops) to rest on while reading or watching television can help with relaxation.
