Chilblains / Poor Circulation
Poor circulation leads to a lack of warmth and nutrients, including oxygen, at the peripheries; particularly the hands and feet. This can lead to serious consequences, particularly for diabetics, the elderly and varicose vein sufferers. Treatment involves symptomatic relief using herbal medicines to promote peripheral blood flow. In addition a daily supplement of Vitamin C with Bioflavonoids is also advisable for those with poor circulation. Chilblains – itchy, swollen, painful patches of inflamed skin usually on the fingers or toes – are caused by hypersensitivity to temperature change and some people are more susceptible than others. For chilblains do not heat your hands quickly by the fire or under a hot water tap; it is the sudden changes that cause the most problems. During cold weather protect your hands and feet from the cold by wearing gloves and thermal insoles inside loose-fitting shoes. As you might expect muscular activity helps improve circulation while a sedentary life-style generally makes things worse. Stress, smoking and stimulants such as coffee all narrow small arteries and should therefore be avoided, as should a high fat diet which makes blood more viscous and thus compromises peripheral blood flow.
