Gingivitis (swollen, bleeding and infected gums) is notoriously common. If left untreated the condition will gradually deteriorate, setting up a focus of infection that is constantly releasing toxins into the body and taxing the immune system. A more violent gum infection is Pyorrhoea, which can rapidly undermine the stability of the teeth, making them loose. Hormonal changes, such as those that occur in pregnancy, can heighten the problem. Diet and oral hygiene certainly need to be attended to. Make sure you are brushing your teeth (and gums) correctly, check with your dentist if necessary, and use dental floss. Don’t stop brushing because your gums are sore and bleed easily. Change to a herbal toothpaste (see below), ordinary toothpastes contain detergents and sweeteners. Any gum problems warrant a visit to your dentist. If the condition is severe seek treatment from a qualified herbalist. Make sure your intake of Vitamin C is adequate; take it as a supplement of up to 1g a day, especially if your intake of raw fruit and vegetables is poor.
