With minor cuts use plenty of cold water to wash out any dirt and foreign objects – the coldness of the water will help stop the bleeding. If the bleeding is profuse, apply compression just above the area to help stem the blood flow. Keeping a minor wound open to clean, dust-free air and using a healing cream or lotion is best.
NB If a cut has been sustained in a rural area, especially where horses are kept, there is a risk of contracting tetanus, and you should seek urgent medical attention.
