Worms

Threadworms are a common problem that can easily be treated at home using herbal medicines. In general, treatment should follow a strict regime for all the family, even if only one member is affected.

All family members should be allocated their own towels and bedding and these should be boil washed at each change. Teach children to wash their hands before meals and after each toilet visit, after playing outside and after contact with animals. Dogs should be not be allowed to lick Children’s faces and ensure that all pets are kept worm-free. Discourage children from scratching an itchy bottom, keep finger nails short and try to use a nail brush on them daily. Close-fitting night clothes and morning baths or showers will help minimise transfer of eggs. Night clothes should be changed and boil washed daily.

Please consult a herbalist for advice on herbal remedies.

Worms thrive in a sweet environment so try to cut out sugary foods and drinks. A healthy diet and regular bowel movements without constipation will help to maintain both a healthy digestive system and an unwelcome environment for worms. Worm-repelling foods include onions and garlic, pumpkin seeds, apples and carrots, cabbage, pineapple, coconut, papaya and figs. These are best given raw on an empty stomach before breakfast. Live yoghurt will help to maintain a healthy gut flora – alternatively Banana Acidophilus is the ideal pro-biotic supplement for children.
