Mouth ulcers usually occur when run down after an infection or during times of stress. Frequently there is an associated digestive problem and some simple herbal medicines alongside hygiene and dietary measures can quickly help to put things right. A Vitamin and Mineral Supplement, such as Multiguard or Floradix, is generally advisable to improve general all round health; while Vitamin C omega oils and Zinc in particular are essential for gum health.
Attention to eating habits may make a big difference for some people. Meal regularity, thorough chewing of food and generally taking time over meals are all essential. Be sure to eat plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables. Fresh pineapple can be of particular benefit being an oral disinfectant – chew it well to ensure it reaches every part of the mouth. Cutting down on dairy produce and avoiding tea, coffee, chocolate and sugar may also prove advisable, while for some wheat intolerance may be a factor.
Mouth ulcers are notorious for re-emerging, so be sure to keep treatment up until you have been clear of them for 3 months. If the ulcers persist beyond this or recur it is important to seek help from a herbalist as they may be indicative of deeper-seated health issues.
