Diarrhoea

If your diarrhoea has appeared after taking anti-biotics, a course of Eliminex plus Acidophilus or Bio-Kult Capsules will help to replace the lost bacterial flora.

For the diarrhoea associated with Irritable Bowel Syndrome a consultation with a professional herbalist is likely to give you the most satisfactory solution.

Maintaining fluid levels is most important – babies and young children need special attention as they can easily become dehydrated. Use the following re-hydration formula: one part apple, grape or orange juice diluted with three parts of fresh water, and a pinch of salt added to it. Rice or barley water is also excellent: boil 25g rice or barley in 500ml water till cooked, strain the water off and drink. Dioralyte, which can be obtained from a chemist, will also replace lost fluids and salts. It is best not to eat until the diarrhoea has stopped, then start with vegetable juices, fruit and steamed vegetables. Live yoghurt or acidophilus tablets will help to re-establish the gut flora, and quickly get the digestive system back to normal.

Seek professional help if the diarrhoea doesn’t improve within 24-36 hours or if it is particularly violent or accompanied by severe pain, vomiting, a high temperature or blood loss.
