Candida is a common and very irritating fungal infection which, nevertheless, can be successfully controlled at home using herbal medicines alongside common-sense hygiene measures and a few simple dietary changes. The Candida species of fungus live in our large intestine and on our skin as part of the normal flora. In some people, however, there can be enough of an over-growth to cause an infection, which is commonly called Thrush. This usually affects the warm and moist folds of the skin and the mucous membranes (primarily mouth and vagina). Externally, if the skin is very sore or delicate, first use Calendula Cream to aid healing then use Tea-Tree & Myrrh Cream to counter the infection and promote further healing. If the infection has spread to toe or fingernails use neat Tea-Tree Essential Oil. Vaginal infections should be treated with Tea-Tree Pessaries. As males can carry the organism without obvious signs sexual partners need to be treated – also Tea Tree Cream should be applied daily to the genitals. Citricidal is another convenient and effective treatment which can be used internally and externally by both partners. To improve the internal microbial environment first take a course of prebiotics such as Eliminex then take probiotics like Acidophilus or Biokult. If a nutritional boost is needed, try Floradix or Multi-Guard. Typically sufferers constantly re-infect themselves either via clothing, bath-towels etc or via contact with their non-symptomatic partners. To counter this it makes sense if both partners undergo the treatment regime and it is certainly essential to maintain strict hygiene measures at home with separate towels, flannels and bedding for each family member and boil washes essential at each linen change. During the treatment period all sugar and alcohol should be avoided. It is also advisable to eliminate yeasts as far as possible i.e. bread, cakes, marmite and other yeast extracts, as well as mushrooms. Avoid pre-prepared and tinned foods and concentrate instead on fresh fruit and vegetables and fresh, home-cooked meals. Cider vinegar can be included in the diet (and also, if diluted 15ml per 500ml, used to wash the vagina, or added to the bath). Olive oil should be eaten raw, e.g. in a salad dressing.
Seeing a herbalist will help allow you access to the herbal remedies that you need to counter this problem.
