Cystitis is inflammation of the bladder and urethra and is most frequently caused by an infection. Symptoms include frequent and painful urination that can be described as having a burning sensation. In some cases the infection can spread up the ureters to the kidneys, causing a kidney infection. Due to anatomical reasons this is a condition that is more likely to affect women than men. Prolonged use of antibiotics can be a cause of cystitis, and may well exacerbate the condition as the bacteria become resistant to the treatment. Seek professional help if the symptoms of cystitis do not improve within a few days, or if you are passing blood. If you are suffering from low back pain, a temperature and headache and generally feel unwell you could be suffering from a kidney infection. Also seek professional help if you are pregnant. It is important to drink plenty of fluids with cystitis: 1-2 litres of water per day.
