For sinusitis associated with thick, stubborn mucus take Elderflower, Peppermint And Composition Essence (not suitable for children). Our Catarrh Mix is the ideal herbal medicine if the sinusitis is associated with a cold or flu virus. For infected sinuses take Echinacea and Garlic and use our Eucalyptus And Thyme Capsules. If you have a thin, watery discharge, take one small sniff of Peppermint Essential Oil to dry up the secretion, this should last for about 20 minutes; don’t overdo this treatment and take special care with children. Please also see the information in our section on Respiratory Allergies.
Extra Vitamin C and a Multi Vitamin/Mineral supplement are recommended as well as supplementary Garlic if daily inclusion in the diet is impractical (or undesirable) for any reason. Attention to digestive issues is frequently necessary -we recommend our Dandelion and Milk Thistle capsules. A course of pre- and probiotics such as Eliminex and Biokult will help to address any imbalance in the gut flora.
Dietary measures to consider include: extra onions and garlic, which are especially good for healthy mucus membranes; and lots of fresh fruit and vegetables, but not oranges which often prove problematic. Finally, excluding dairy and/or wheat makes a dramatic difference for many patients.
If your sinusitis is persistent and long running it is advisable to seek a consultation with a qualified herbalist to effect a comprehensive recovery program.
