The Common Cold is caused by a variety of viruses, most commonly a Rhinovirus. Colds tend to strike when our resistance is low, perhaps due to tiredness, depression or stress. They are most common in winter, when our diets tend to be lacking in fresh (raw) fruit and vegetables, which provide vitamin C, and high in starchy foods, which congest the system. Colds can be nipped in the bud if tackled early enough, but should not be suppressed, rather view them as a cleansing process. Try not to carry on regardless, listen to your body, and at least make sure you get a good night’s sleep. The herbal approach is to aid the body in dealing with the virus and throw out the toxic waste. Keep off all dairy products, sugar and refined carbohydrates to prevent excess mucus production and not to over stress the immune system. Try to stick mainly to fruit and vegetables, or even fast for 1 to 2 days on juices. Garlic and onions are anti-infective, and are most beneficial raw. Beetroot boosts the immune system, have it as a vegetable, or as juice (a wineglassful per day minimum). The latter can be mixed with apple or carrot juice for those who find the taste too cloying. Vitamin C also boosts the immune system.
